Rusted villa gate hinge before gate and fence restoration in Bali

Gates are the first thing rust takes in Bali. They face the street, catch every rain, and their hinges and lower rails hold water long after the sun comes out. I have restored several hundred gates across Canggu, Seminyak and Umalas since 2017, and the failure pattern is almost always the same: someone painted straight over old rust, the coating sealed the corrosion in, and within a year it bubbled back through. Proper restoration is 70% preparation — grinding back to sound metal — and only 30% paint. That is exactly how we do it.

What Gate & Fence Restoration Includes

Full Rust Removal

Angle grinding and sanding back to sound metal, never just a quick scuff. Pitted areas that cannot be ground clean get a phosphoric-acid rust converter so corrosion stops underneath the new coating.

Zinc-Rich Primer

A zinc-phosphate primer goes on bare metal the same day it is exposed — humidity in Bali starts flash rust within hours. Zinc gives sacrificial protection at scratches and stone chips.

Two-Coat Finish

Two coats of UV-stable enamel or polyurethane, colour-matched to your villa. Black, dark bronze and charcoal are the usual requests; we can match any RAL colour.

Hardware Service

Hinges, locks, drop bolts and sliding-gate rollers are cleaned, greased and adjusted. Rusted-through fasteners are replaced with stainless ones at no extra charge.

Why Gates Fail So Fast Near the Coast

Most Bali gates are welded from hollow box section with 1.5–2 mm walls. Rain enters through unsealed top edges and weld pinholes, sits inside the section, and rusts the steel from the inside out. Within 500 m of the beach in Canggu or Berawa, salt spray accelerates this so much that an unprotected gate shows rust streaks in 2–3 months. We drill discreet drainage holes in the bottom rail and seal top openings — a small detail that adds years of life. The full chemistry of it is in our article on why metal rusts so fast in Bali.

If a section is rusted through completely — common on lower rails and hinge plates — we cut it out and weld in new box section before coating, so you are not paying for paint over scrap. For beachfront properties we recommend upgrading the finish to a marine-grade coating system; for gates with only light surface rust, a cheaper rust removal and treatment visit may be all you need.

How It Works

  1. Send photos on WhatsApp

Two or three photos of the gate and close-ups of the worst rust. We reply the same day with a price range.

  2. Free on-site inspection

We check wall thickness, hidden corrosion inside hollow sections and hinge condition, then confirm a fixed quote.

  3. Restoration on site

Grinding, converter, primer and two finish coats over 1–2 days. We protect the driveway and walls with sheeting and clean up fully.

  4. Final check and guarantee

You inspect the work with us. Everything is covered by a written 12-month guarantee against peeling and rust return.

What It Costs

A standard single swing gate starts from IDR 1,500,000 including all materials. Large double or sliding gates run IDR 2,500,000–4,000,000 depending on size and rust depth. Fence panels are priced per linear metre from IDR 150,000. Beachfront properties needing marine-grade systems add 30–40%. Full rate tables are on our anti-corrosion pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gate restoration cost in Bali?
From IDR 1,500,000 for a standard swing gate, including rust removal, primer and two finish coats. Sliding and double gates run IDR 2,500,000–4,000,000. See the pricing page for the full table.
How long does the work take?
Most gates take 1–2 days on site: day one for rust removal, converter and primer, day two for finish coats. Fences are typically 10–15 linear metres per day.
Can a badly rusted gate still be saved?
Usually yes. Sections that are rusted through — lower rails, hinge plates — are cut out and replaced with new welded box section before coating. If more than roughly half the steel is gone we will honestly tell you a new gate is cheaper.
Do you need to remove the gate?
No — almost all restoration is done with the gate in place. We only remove gates when the lower hinge area needs welding that cannot be done safely in situ.
Is powder coating an option for gates?
Powder coating gives a great finish but requires removing the gate and taking it to an oven facility, which adds cost and downtime. For most installed gates a three-layer liquid system performs just as well. We compare both in powder coating vs paint.
