Rust removal by sanding on metal surface during treatment in Bali

Every coating failure I have ever been called to fix in Bali traces back to the same root cause: paint applied over live rust. Rust is porous and holds salt and moisture, so corrosion keeps eating the steel under the new paint until it pushes the film off in bubbles. Rust removal is not the glamorous part of this trade, but it is the part that decides everything. We do it mechanically — grinders, wire wheels, sanders — then kill the residue in pits with a phosphoric-acid converter, and only then call a surface ready for primer.

Rust Removal Methods We Use

Grinding & Wire Wheel

Angle grinders with flap discs and knotted wire wheels take heavy scale and flaking rust back to sound metal. Fast and thorough on flat sections and box steel.

Detail Sanding

Orbital and hand sanding for profiles, ornamental scrollwork and edges where a grinder would gouge. Slower, but the only way on decorative gates.

Rust Converter on Pitting

Deep pits cannot be ground clean without thinning the steel, so residual rust is converted chemically into a stable, paintable iron-phosphate layer.

Prep-Only Option

Have your own painter or want to paint yourself? We do the removal and converter stage only, and hand you a primer-ready surface with advice on what to apply.

When DIY Rust Removal Makes Sense — and When It Does Not

Light orange surface rust on a garden table is a perfectly good weekend job — wire brush, converter, outdoor enamel, done. We wrote an honest step-by-step DIY rust removal guide that tells you exactly what to buy in Bali hardware stores and the mistakes that waste the effort. No hard sell: half the people who read it never need to call us.

Where DIY stops making sense: structural steel, roof trusses, balcony railing anchors, anything load-bearing, and any metal within sight of the ocean. There the rust you can see is rarely the whole story, and the coating system matters as much as the prep — that is when a professional protective coating or full gate restoration earns its price. Heavy pitting from years of exposure in places like Kuta or Sanur seafront usually needs converter chemistry and film builds you cannot buy retail.

How It Works

  1. Send photos of the rust

Close-ups plus one wide shot. We tell you the honest severity — sometimes the answer is a DIY tip, free.

  2. Fixed quote

Per-item or per-m² price depending on the job. Minimum visit IDR 350,000 covers a half-day of treatment.

  3. Mechanical removal + conversion

Grinding, sanding and converter on site, with dust sheets and cleanup. Bare metal gets primer the same day to beat flash rust.

  4. Coating recommendation

We hand over a primer-ready or fully primed surface and a written recommendation of the right topcoat for the location.

What It Costs

Rust removal and treatment runs IDR 60,000–110,000 per m² with a minimum visit charge of IDR 350,000. Combined with our coating services the removal stage is bundled into the quoted price — see the pricing page. Prep-only jobs include same-day zinc primer so your clean steel does not flash-rust overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does rust removal cost in Bali?
IDR 60,000–110,000 per m² depending on rust depth, with a minimum visit of IDR 350,000. If we also do the coating, removal is bundled into the project price — see pricing.
Can rust be removed completely?
From sound steel, yes — mechanically to bare metal. Deep pitting always retains microscopic rust, which is why we chemically convert pits rather than pretending grinding got everything.
Do you use sandblasting?
For most villa work, no — blasting needs containment that rarely makes sense at an occupied property. We achieve the same standard with power tools. For industrial jobs in Denpasar we can arrange mobile blasting.
Should I try removing rust myself first?
For small, non-structural items — absolutely, and our DIY guide shows how. For structural steel, balconies and beachfront metal, have it assessed first; photos cost nothing.
